Space!

Shay was beyond thrilled that this week we were learning about 2 of her favorite things- The Statue of Liberty and Space. Last week, she took a book out of this weeks reading bag called You Wouldn't Want To Be A Worker On The Statue of Liberty and read it over and over again. After reading, she thought we should take a trip up to New York, after all, Uncle Troy is there! Maybe someday soon.

Then we opened up today's lesson plan and saw we reading about the Solar System! Of course, we had a book to go with it. We read  The Planets. She read most of the book on her own before getting tired around Saturn. There was a lot of information that is hard to wrap her head around- especially Earth days and years compared with those on other planets, but I think she understood for the most part. After reading the book, she drew the Solar System.
I wrote the words (except for her name) :)
So proud!

Her art is really coming along. Maybe soon we can get her writing.

Not taking the day off!

After the first week of school, the only issue Shay has is that she has to be perfect. She was frustrated with handwriting because she thinks it has to be exactly the way in the book or on her paper. So this weekend, we went up to Frederick to shop for items to assist with handwriting. We drove up all the way up there to find an empty storefront which used to be Learning How ( I could have sworn their website said they still had a location there). Thankfully, there is another school store up in Frederick, so the trip was not wasted. We went over to Home and School Connection and saw a sign on their door that they were moving and they were going to be closed next weekend! We ended up getting a dry erase board with lines, that after today I will probably be taking back as it doesn't erase well. We also found magnetic letters that would work on the board and had 120 pieces! She wanted to play with them the minute we got home, but I somehow managed to persuade her to wait until Monday.

Monday!? Yep, we had school today.

This week, we are studying Vermont and Massachusetts. One thing she has noticed is that there are a lot of trees and snow in all of the states we've studied so far. We watched a video on how to tap a tree for Maple Syrup. She liked it so much, we watched another. Thank goodness for You Tube!

She was excited when we pulled out the dry erase board and letters. I figured to help her with her spelling, we would use the letters. So today, she just had to match the magnetic letters with my awful handwriting.
See where the blue blur is. Yep, where it wouldn't erase!
Creating her own words.
I think it's a hit!

After school, we went to the fabric store because they had a 50% off sale. We loaded up on lots of fabric. We don't have any projects in mind, but how can you pass up a sale! While we were waiting in line to get our fabric cut, I noticed these laminated place mats over in the seasonal items. They were $1 each and they fit in with our unit studies this year!
States on the front.
State flags and some facts on the back side.
She loves her Presidents.
It's official...no Pluto on the main Solar System. He does get a mention in the lower right insert.

She read every President's name while the sales clerk was cutting our fabric. Even when we are not in "school," we can find an opportunity to learn anywhere!
